  •   Acting Government Statistician, June 2006 to April 2007

      Responsibilities

Primary responsibility was the routine management and administration of the Ghana Statistical Service as prescribed in the Statistical ACT of 1985. Even though the top management should consist of three persons (Government Statistician and two Deputies) I was the only one at post then so  I had to perform the three roles,  In spite of this I was able to chalk some remarkable achievements

Achievements:

  1. Within the 11 months that I acted as the Government Statistician, GSS published and disseminated 14 technical documents, most of them published for the first time at GSS or had not been published for decades. For example, the last time that the Economic Survey was last published was in 1985 but this document was written, published and disseminated within two and a half months after the idea to do so had occurred to me.
  2. I Instituted the monthly press releases of Consumer Price Index (CPI) which takes place timely in the middle of the month
  3. The Producer Price Index (PPI) was introduced for the first time in the country at GSS and its monthly release at the end of the following month was also institutionalized
  4. I showed scientifically in a paper which was presented at a conference in Geneva that it was sufficient to collect price data once a month for the calculation of the monthly inflation rate instead of the time-old twice a month. This was later adopted by the GSS after I had left.
  5. Negotiated for the end-of-year allowance to be paid to staff
  6. I Introduced Ghana Statistical Service cloth.
  7. Acquired a large stretch of land (300 acres) for staff
  8. I adopted the GSS logo
